[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Η λ. ανάγεται στην ΙΕ ρίζα okw- «βλέπω» (βλ. και λ. όπωπα). Αξιοσημείωτη είναι η εξέλιξη της λ. από τη σημ. «όραση» στη σημ. «άνοιγμα απ' το οποίο βλέπει κανείς, τρύπα». Η λ. ὀπή απαντά ως β' συνθετικό με τη μορφή -ωπός στις λ. εὐρ-ωπός, πολυ-ωπός, στεν-ωπός με έκταση λόγω συνθέσεως. Τα σύνθ. αυτά διακρίνονται από τα σύνθ. σε -ωπός < ὄψ, ὄπωπα. Τέλος, η λ. απαντά ως β' συνθετικό χωρίς έκταση στις λ. δι-όπη, ἐν-όπη, βορβορ-όπη, μετ-όπη].
