French (Bailly abrégé)

ης (ἡ) :
anchois ou sardine.
Étymologie: DELG on peut accepter l'étym. pop. priv., φύω, car il ne s'agit pas d'un poisson précis, mais de la friture, de petits poissons « qui n’ont pas poussé ».

Russian (Dvoretsky)

ἀφύη: ἡ (gen. pl. ἀφύων) сардина или анчоус Arph., Arst., Plut., Luc.

Greek (Liddell-Scott)

ἀφύη: [ῠ], ἡ, (ἀλλ.’ ἐν τῇ γεν. σ. 54.

Greek Monotonic

ἀφύη: ἡ, σε γεν. πληθ. ἀφύων (όχι ἀφυῶν), είδος αντζούγιας ή σαρδέλας, σε Αριστοφ.

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: f.
Meaning: small fry of various fishes (Epich. H. s. ἀφύων τιμή. S. Thompson. Fishes 19f.). ἀφύα· μεμβράς H.
Other forms: Also ἀφύα. The gen. pl. is ἀφύων, not -ῶν. Mostly plural.
Dialectal forms: Myc. aphu-we, -de perhaps PlN /Aphuwei/, /Aphun-de/, s. below.
Derivatives: ἀφύδιον (Ar., with υ; s. Schwyzer 199); ἀφυώδης whitish (Hp.). Denom. ἀφύω become whitish (Hp.); Chantr. Form. 431.
Origin: IE [Indo-European] [146] *bhuh₂- grow
Etymology: From α privativum and φύω (one compares nonnats Aphua pellucida in Nice) seems folk etymology, but see now Meier-Brügger, MSS 52, 1991, 123 - 125, who defends derivation from *n̥-bhuH-o- without growth (a recent formation as against Skt. ábhva- monster, Unwesen < *n̥-bhu-o- with loss of laryngeal). The accentuation of the gen. pl. ἀφύων (not -ῶν, Hdn. Gr. 1. 425, 13) points to an unextended stem ἀφυ- (nom. *ἀφυ-ς), cf. φυγή, φύγα-δε. Perh. also in Myc. aphu-we, -de. (Not with Bechtel, Dial. 3, 285: ἀφύη from the colour; rather the other way round).

Middle Liddell

[in gen. pl. ἀφύων (not ἀφυῶν)]
a sort of anchovy or sardine, Ar.

Frisk Etymology German

ἀφύη: {aphúē}
Grammar: f.
Meaning: Fischbrut, kleine Fische verschiedener Art (Epich., Ar. usw.; im Att. nur im Plur. nach H. s. ἀφύων τιμή; zum Sachlichen ausführlich Thompson Fishes s. v.).
Derivative: Ableitungen: Demin. ἀφύδιον (Ar.; zum Lautlichen Schwyzer 199); ἀφυώδης weißlich (Hp.). Denominatives Verb ἀφύω weißlich, bleich werden (Hp.), wahrscheinlich retrograde Ableitung aus ἀφυώδης nach δάκνω: δακνώδης u. a. (Chantraine Formation 431).
Etymology: Unerklärt. Die Zurückführung auf α privativum und φύω (woraus die Mittelmeerbez. nonnats) ist wohl als Volksetymologie zu verstehen. Unrichtig Bechtel Dial. 3, 285: ἀφύη nach der Farbe benannt, vgl. ἀφυώδης und ἀφύω (die ja im Gegenteil aus ἀφύη stammen). Noch andere Versuche bei Bq.
