French (Bailly abrégé)
-ῶ :
s’apercevoir, remarquer, comprendre.
Étymologie: R. κοϜ observer, surveiller.
Greek Monotonic
κοέω: συνηρ. κοῶ, νοώ, παρατηρώ, ακούω, σε Ανακρ.
Russian (Dvoretsky)
κοέω: ион. (= νοέω) замечать, слышать, воспринимать (Anacr.; ср. ἀμνοκῶν и θυοσκόος).
Frisk Etymological English
Grammatical information: v.
Meaning: remark, learn, hear (Anacr. 4, 14, Hellad. ap. Phot., prob. also H. [cod. κοθεῖ]);
Derivatives: also κοάω in κοᾳ̃ ἀκούει, πεύθεται; ἐκοᾶμες ἠκούσαμεν, ἐπυθόμεθα; ἐκοάθη ἐπενοήθη, ἐφωράθη; κοᾶσαι αἰσθέσθαι H.; - ἐκόησεν (Call. Fr. 53). - Seemingly primary ἔκομεν εἴδομεν, ἑωρῶμεν, ᾐσθόμεθα H. (s. below). - Verbal adj. in ἀνα-κῶς (s. v.). Λαο-κόων, εὑρυ-κόωσα who learns from far (Euph. 112, H.) a. o. (cf. Bechtel Namenstudien 37f.).
Origin: IE [Indo-European] [587] *(s)keu(H)- note, see, realize, hear
Etymology: On κοίης etc. s. κοῖον. As iterative-intensive deverbative (after Zupitza KZ 40, 251 w. n. rather denominative) κο(Ϝ)έω (beside which κο(Ϝ)άω; Schwyzer 717ff.) identical with Lat. caveō, cavēre (< *covēre) beware. A zero-grade primary formation is seen in Skt. ā-kúvate have in view. Also in ἀκεύει (= ἀκέϜει?) τηρεῖ H. a cognate primary (full grade) verb has been assumed. (Unclear however ἔκομεν; s. Schwyzer 721 n. 10 a. 740). To these verbs several verbal nouns are found, e. g. Skt.. kaví- m. seeer, poet, wise man. - Beside IE. keu- there was skeu-, s. θυοσκόος. Cf. also ἀκούω and κῦδος. More forms s. Pok. 587f., W.-Hofmann s. caveō, Vasmer Russ. et. Wb. s. čúju.
