Frisk Etymology German

Ἑλλήσποντος: (seit Il.),
{Ellḗspontos}
Grammar: m.
Meaning: in ältester Zeit Ben. der Propontis und der Dardanellen einschließlich eines Teils des äußeren sich nach dem Ägäischen Meere und dem Golf Melas hin öffnenden Meeres, seit dem 5. Jhdt. oft auf die Dardanellenstraße eingeschränkt, s. V. Burr Nostrum mare (Würzb. Stud. z. Altertumswiss. 4 [1932]) 11ff.
Composita: Komp. Ἑλλησποντοφύλακες Ben. der Zollbeamten am Hellespont;
Derivative: Ableitungen Ἑλλησπόντιος, -ποντιακός, f. -ποντιάς hellespontisch, Ἑλλησποντίας, ion. -ίης (ἄνεμος) N. des Nordostwindes (vgl. Chantraine Formation 95), alles ion.-att.
Etymology: Die herkömmliche Erklärung als "Meer der Helle" wird von Kretschmer Glotta 27, 29 unter Heranziehung ähnlicher Fälle gegen Burr (s. oben) mit Recht verteidigt.

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: m.
Meaning: Orig. name of the Propontis and the Dardanelles with a part of the sea which opens to the Aegaean and the Gulf of Melas; since the 5th cent. often limited to the straits of the Dardanelle. (Il.). Cf. V. Burr Nostrum mare (Würzb. Stud. z. Altertumswiss. 4 [1932]) 11ff.
Compounds: Comp. Ἐλλησποντο-φύλακες name of the custom officials on the Hellespont;
Derivatives: Ἐλλησπόντιος, -ποντιακός, f. -ποντιάς hellespontic, Ἐλλησποντίας, Ion. -ίης (ἄνεμος) name of the Northeastwind (cf. Chantr. Form. 95), Ion.-Att.
Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: The traitional explanation as "Sea of Helle" is defended by Kretschmer Glotta 27, 29 against Burr (s. above). The old etymology seems most improbable to me.

The Dardanelles (/dɑːrdəˈnɛlz/; Turkish: Çanakkale Boğazı, lit. 'Strait of Çanakkale', Greek: Δαρδανέλλια, romanized: Dardanéllia), also known from Classical Antiquity as the Hellespont (/ˈhɛlɪspɒnt/; Classical Greek: Ἑλλήσποντος, romanized: Hellēspontos, lit. 'Sea of Helle'), is a narrow, natural strait and internationally significant waterway in northwestern Turkey that forms part of the continental boundary between Europe and Asia, and separates Asian Turkey from European Turkey. One of the world's narrowest straits used for international navigation, the Dardanelles connects the Sea of Marmara with the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, while also allowing passage to the Black Sea by extension via the Bosphorus. The Dardanelles is 61 kilometres (38 mi) long, and 1.2 to 6 kilometres (0.75 to 3.73 mi) wide, averaging 55 metres (180 ft) deep with a maximum depth of 103 metres (338 ft) at its narrowest point abreast the city of Çanakkale.
