French (Bailly abrégé)

οῦ (ὁ) :
trait, flèche.
Étymologie: οἴσω.

Russian (Dvoretsky)

ὀϊστός: атт. οἰστός ὁ, редко ἡ стрела (πτερόεις, χαλκήρης Hom.).

Greek (Liddell-Scott)

ὀϊστός: Ἀττ. οἰστὸς (Πόρσ. εἰς Εὐρ. Μήδ.

Greek Monotonic

ὀϊστός: Αττ. οἰστός, βέλος, σε Όμηρ., Ησίοδ. κ.λπ. (αμφίβ. προέλ.).

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: m. (f.)
Meaning: arrow (Il.);
Other forms: οἰστός (Att.).
Compounds: As 1. member e.g. in ὀϊστο-δέγμων holding arrows (A. in lyr.).
Derivatives: ὀϊστεύω, also with δι-, ἀπ-, to shoot arrows (Hom., Nonn., AP) with ὀϊστευ-τήρ (Nonn., AP), -τής (Call.) archer, -μα n. arrowshot (Plu.).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]
Etymology: No convincing etymology. As ὀ- originally was not part of a diphthong, Brugmann IF 29, 231 (with criticism of earlier views) sees in ὀ-ϊσ-τός a prefixed verbal adj. to Skt. iṣ-yati bring in quick movement; prop. meaning "rushing on, flying towards" (or "uged on, sent off"?), with nearest formal connection to ὀΐομαι (s.v.); also ἰός arrow would be cognate. -- Older attempts also in Bq (all rightly rejected); cf. also Kretschmer Glotta 4, 351 (against Sadée KZ 43, 245ff.). - I think that Chantraine is correct in supposing that it is a Pre-Greek word (not in Furnée).

Frisk Etymology German

ὀϊστός: (ep. poet. seit Il.),
{oïstós}
Forms: οἰστός (att.)
Grammar: m. (f.)
Meaning: Pfeil;
Composita : als Vorderglied z.B. in ὀϊστοδέγμων Pfeile enthaltend (A. in lyr.).
Derivative: Davon ὀϊστεύω, auch mit δι-, ἀπ-, Pfeile schießen (Hom., Nonn., AP) mit ὀϊστευτήρ (Nonn., AP), -τής (Kall.) Pfeilschütze, -μα n. Pfeilschuß (Plu.).
Etymology : Keine ganz überzeugende Etymologie. Da ὀ- urspr. keinen Diphthong bildet, will Brugmann IF 29, 231 (mit Kritik früherer Deutungen) in ὀϊστός ein präfigiertes Verbaladj. zu aind. iṣ-yati in eilige Bewegung setzen sehen; eig. Bed. "anstürmend, darauf losfliegend" (od. "angetrieben, entsendet"?), mit nächster formaler Beziehung zu ὀΐομαι (s.d.); auch ἰός Pfeil wäre damit verwandt. — Ältere Versuche auch bei Bq (alle mit Recht abgelehnt); dazu noch Kretschmer Glotta 4, 351 (gegen Sadée KZ 43, 245ff.).
