Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: adv.
Meaning: early (Il.).
Compounds: As 1. member e. g. in ἠρι-γένεια born early (Il.), surname of Ήώς, also subst. for this goddess (Schwyzer 456, 474, Schwyzer-Debrunner 34), later also -ής (A. R.); ἠρι-γέρων "early grey", also the plant Senecio (Thphr.; Strömberg Pflanzennamen 56).
Origin: IE [Indo-European] [86] *h₂eus-er-i (early) in the morning
Etymology: Seems to stand for *ἤερι (cf. ἠέριος, Ήερί-βοια) < *ἄιερι, which is explained as locative with lengthened grade beside full grade *αἴερι in ἄρι-στον breakfast (s. v.). To *αἴερι agrees exactly Goth. air, OWNo. ār adv. early from IE *ai̯er-i. The noun is seen in Av. ayarǝ, gen. ayąn day. However, the lengthned grade is found nowhere else. Kiparsky (Lang. 43, 624-6) proposed to derive the form from a locative *auseri < *h₂eus-, cf. ἠώς, in the early morning; cf. also ἠικανός.

Middle Liddell

early, Hom.; ἦρι μάλ', μάλ' ἦρι Hom.

Frisk Etymology German

ἦρι: {ē̃ri}
Grammar: Adv.
Meaning: früh (Hom.).
Composita : Als Vorderglied z. B. in ἠριγένεια die frühgeborene (seit Il.), Beiname der Ἠώς, auch subst. für diese selbst (Schwyzer 456, 474, Schwyzer-Debrunner 34), später auch -ής (A. R.); ἠριγέρων "Frühgreis", Senecio (Thphr.; Strömberg Pflanzennamen 56).
