Greek Monotonic
εὐηγενής: -ές, Επικ. αντί εὐγενής II, σε Ομήρ. Ιλ., Θεόκρ.
Frisk Etymological English
Grammatical information: adj.
Meaning: (see below) Λ 427, Ψ81 (here v.l. εὐηφενής), h. Ven. 229, Theoc. 27, 43, IG 14, 1389: 1, 29.
Origin: GR [a formation built with Greek elements]
Etymology: The reading εὐηγενής = εὐγενής (Hss., Aristarch) is in Hom. as bad reading for εὐηφενής strongly suspect (as PN IG 12: 8, 376, 14), which was not well known, as ἄφενος is only known from this form. The secondary εὐηγενής, stands beside several forms in -γενής with preceding -η-, was taken over by posthom. poets. - Not with Prellwitz Glotta 19, 103: -η- emphasizing. On εὐηφενής s. Bechtel Lex. s. v. and Leumann Hom. Wörter 117 n. 83. See on ἄφενος, and Masson, RPh.1965, 239f.
Middle Liddell
εὐ-ηγενής, ές [epic for εὐγενής, Il., Theocr.]
Frisk Etymology German
εὐηγενής: Λ 427, Ψ81 (hier v.l. εὐηφενής), h. Ven. 229, Theok. 27, 43, IG 14, 1389: 1, 29.
{euēgenḗs}
— Abzulehnen Prellwitz Glotta 19, 103: -η- hervorhebend. Zu εὐηφενής s. auch Bechtel Lex. s. v. und Leumann Hom. Wörter 117 A. 83.
