Etymology : Genaue außergriechische Entsprechungen fehlen. Wird gewöhnlich mit γαυλός, γυρός, γύαλον usw. zu der allumfassenden Sippe idg. geu- (gēu-) biegen, krummen, wölben gezogen; die allgemeine Bedeutung ebenso wie der schwankende Vokalismus und die wechselnden Formantien beschränken den Wert der landläufigen Zusammenstellungen. Da sich das σ-Suffix sehr wohl aus dem Griechischen selbst erklären läßt, haben Vergleiche mit semantisch abseits liegenden ähnlichen Bildungen in anderen Sprachen (WP. 1, 558, Pok. 398) kein Interesse.
