[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Πρωταρχικός τ. τών δειρή, δέρη, δέρα θεωρείται ο τ. δερFᾱ, ο οποίος απαντά και στην Αρκαδική. Στις ινδο-ιρανο-βαλτο-σλαβικές γλώσσες μαρτυρούνται ετυμολογικώς συγγενείς λέξεις
πρβλ. αρχ. ινδ. και αβεστ grīvā «λαιμός, τράχηλος», ρωσ. grīva «χαίτη, ράχη βουνού», λεττ. grīva «εκβολή ποταμού», οι οποίες οδήγησαν στην αναγωγή σε αρχικό τ. gwer-uā (παράλληλα προς το gwrī-uā). Η υπόθεση όμως αυτή προσκρούει στην ύπαρξη αιολ. τ. δέρα αντί του αναμενόμενου βέρα, αν και υποστηρίχθηκε ότι πιθ. στη Λεσβιακή το gw μπροστά από e είχε περισσότερο χειλική προφορά απ' ό,τι στις άλλες διαλέκτους. Η σχέση εξάλλου μεταξύ gwer- και gwrī- δεν είναι σαφής και έχει δώσει λαβή στη διατύπωση διαφόρων υποθέσεων. Τέλος, δεν αποκλείεται να υπάρχει ετυμολογική σχέση με τη ρίζα του βιβρώσκω].
