Etymology: Bildung wie δρέπανον, κόπανον und andere Gerätenamen. Wie so viele Waffenbezeichnungen LW ohne Etymologie. Die herkömmliche Anknüpfung an σφάζω, σφαγή über *σφαγσκανον (Prellwitz) ist weder lautlich noch morphologisch einwandfrei. — Specht KZ 66, 220 empfiehlt mit Vorbehalt (nach Jacobi) die Kombination mit aind. khaḍgá- Schwert (dagegen Mayrhofer s. v.).
