ὄφελον
διὸ δὴ πᾶς ἀνὴρ σπουδαῖος τῶν ὄντων σπουδαίων πέρι πολλοῦ δεῖ μὴ γράψας ποτὲ ἐν ἀνθρώποις εἰς φθόνον καὶ ἀπορίαν καταβαλεῖ → And this is the reason why every serious man in dealing with really serious subjects carefully avoids writing, lest thereby he may possibly cast them as a prey to the envy and stupidity of the public | Therefore every man of worth, when dealing with matters of worth, will be far from exposing them to ill feeling and misunderstanding among men by committing them to writing
English (Strong)

English (Thayer)
(for ὠφελον, without the augment, 2nd aorist of ὀφείλω; in earlier Greek with an infinitive, as ὠφελον θανεῖν, I ought to have died, expressive of a wish, equivalent to would that I were dead; in later Greek it assumes the nature of an interjection, to be rendered) would that, where one wishes that a thing had happened which has not happened, or that a thing be done which probably will not be done (cf. Winer's Grammar, 301 f (283); Buttmann, § 150,5): with an optative present with an indicative imperfect, Rev. ibid. G L T Tr WH; Epictetus diss. 2,18, 15; Ignatius ad Smyrn. c. 12 [ET]); with an indicative aorist, ὄφελον ἀπεθάνομεν, Lucian, soloec.
