Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: m.
Meaning: binding? only K 466. δέελος δεσμός, ἅμμα H.
Origin: IE [Indo-European] [183] *deh₁- bind
Etymology: Ruijgh, Lingua 25 (1970) 319 (s.v. δῆλος) thinks that the identification of δέελος with δῆλος is a mistake of ancient grammarians. Note that δέαλος could well have been used in this place. "the presence of τε after σῆμα obliges to see δέελον as a substantive." Hesychius gives the right form. It is derived from δέω bind, with the suffix -ελο-, i.e. *deh₁-elo-. It could have meant (French) lien. (He also gives another possibility, which seems less probable to me.) Cf. also δῆλος.

Middle Liddell

resolved form of δῆλος, Il.
