[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Η λ. θεωρείται ότι προέρχεται από αρχικό τ. ἄκαρ-στος από ρίζα ακ-(«αιχμηρός» κ.λπ.) και είναι συγγενής ως προς την προέλευση με τις λ. ἄκαρνα, λατ. acer, -eris και το γερμ. Ahorn «σφένδαμνος». Ως προς το τέρμα η λ. σχηματίζεται αναλογικά προς άλλα ονόματα φυτών που λήγουν σε -στος, πρβλ. πλατάνιστος. Βλ. και λήμμα ακ-].
