Acer monspessulanum

Acer monspessulanum, the Montpellier maple, is a species of maple native to the Mediterranean region from Morocco and Portugal in the west, to Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, and Israel in the east, and north to the Jura Mountains in France and the Eifel in Germany.

[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Όνομα φυτού, αβέβαιης ετυμολ., με επίθημα -αμνον πιθ. αιγαιακής προελεύσεως (πρβλ. δίκτ-αμνον, ῥάδαμνος). Η λ. ωστόσο έχει συνδεθεί με το θ. του σφενδ-όνη, λόγω της ελαφράς κίνησης του πλούσιου φυλλώματος του φυτού. Κατ' άλλη άποψη, ο βυζ. τ. άσφένδαμνος θα μπορούσε να οδηγήσει στην υπόθεση ότι το όνομα του φυτού σχηματίστηκε από το τοπωνύμιο Ἄσπενδος (πρβλ. και τον τ. του Ησυχίου σπένδαμνον), όπως και το δίκταμνον σχηματίστηκε πιθ. από το όνομα του όρους Δίκτη].
