2. παθ. αποτυγχάνω.
[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Λέξη ετυμολογικά συγγενής πιθ. με τη λ. μύλη «εξάμβλωμα» ή με τη λ. μύλη «μυλόπετρα» (οπότε θα πρόκειται για μεταφορική χρήση) καθώς και με τη λ. ἀμβλύς.

Russian (Dvoretsky)

ἀμβλίσκω: производить выкидыш, вытравлять плод Plat., Plut.

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: v.
Meaning: cause to miscarry (S.)
Other forms: (ἐξ-)αμβλόομαι, -όω (Ion.- Att.), -ώω (Max.), -ώσκειν τὸ ἀτελες γεννῆσαι, τὸ φθεῖραι βρέφος (Suid.), -ώσσειν ὠμοτοκεῖν H. Aor. (ἐξ-)αμβλῶσαι
Derivatives: From ἀμβλόομαι: ἄμβλωσις miscarriage (Lys.).
Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably] [716, 719] *h₂mlh₃-?
Etymology: The connection with μύλη as miscarriage (Hp., recte hard formation in a woman's womb) should be given up; Chantraine thinks it may be the word mill, and Frisk, who gives the suggestion under ἀμβλὶσκω, does not mention it s.v. μύλη. Rix (MSS 27 (1970) 105 n. 41) considers *h₂mlh₃- and connection with ἀμβλύς (but see s.v.).

Middle Liddell

ἀμβλύς
1. to cause to miscarry, Soph., Plat.
2. of the woman, to miscarry, Plut.

Frisk Etymology German

ἀμβλίσκω: (Pl.), -άνω (Max. Tyr. u. a.),
{amblískō}
Forms: (ἐξ-)αμβλόομαι, -όω (ion. att.), -ώω (Max.), -ώσκειν· τὸ ἀτελὲς γεννῆσαι, τὸ φθεῖραι βρέφος (Suid.), -ώσσειν· ὠμοτοκεῖν H., Aor. (ἐξ-)αμβλῶσαι
Grammar: v.
Meaning: eine Fehlgeburt tun, die Leibesfrucht abtreiben.
Derivative: Von ἀμβλόομαι, -όω gehen mehrere Ableitungen aus: ἄμβλωσις Fehlgeburt, Abtreibung (Lys., Arist. u. a.) mit ἀμβλώσιμος (Max., vgl. Arbenz Adj. auf -ιμος 88), ἄμβλωμα (Antipho Soph., Aret.), ἀμβλωσμός (Aret.); ferner das Nomen instrumenti ἀμβλωτήριον (Orib.) und das Adj. ἀμβλωτικός (Gal.). Eigenartig ist die Bildung von ἀμβλωθρίδιον fehlgeborenes Kind (Ph.), auch abtreibende Arznei (Poll.), -ίδιος Fehlgeburt verursachend (Aret.): an -θρο- ist ein neues Suffix -ίδιον hinzugefügt worden, vgl. Chantraine Formation 373 und 68ff.
Etymology : Anknüpfung an μύλη Mißgeburt (Hp., Arist.) und besonders an das fernliegende μέλεος (Fick KZ 20, 169f., Froehde BB 7, 327) ganz hypothetisch.
