Greek (Liddell-Scott)

Εἰρ. 199.

French (Bailly abrégé)

ου (ὁ) :
1 voûte (du ciel);
2 alvéole, cellule d’abeille.
Étymologie: κύτος.

Greek Monolingual

κύτταρος, ὁ (Α)
1. κυψέλη κηρήθρας
2. κοίλωμα που υπάρχει μέσα στον βλαστό της κουκιάς
3. κώνος πεύκου
4. το ακανθώδες περίβλημα του καρπού τών κυπελλοφόρων φυτών
5. φρ. «κύτταρος οὐρανοῡ» — ο κοίλος θόλος.
[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Αβέβαιης ετυμολ. Η σύνδεση της λ. με τον τ. κύσσαρος δεν φαίνεται πιθανή].

Greek Monotonic

κύττᾰρος: ὁ (κύτος),
1. κελί κυψέλης μελισσών ή σφηκών, σε Αριστοφ.
2. μεταφ., τοὐρανοῦ τὸν κ., θόλος ουρανού, στον ίδ.

Dutch (Woordenboekgrieks.nl)

κύτταρος -ου, ὁ [κύτος] ronde ruimte:. ὥσπερ οἱ σκώληκες ἐν τοῖς κυττάροις zoals de larven in hun cellen Aristoph. Ve. 1111; τοὐρανοῦ τὸν κύτταρον het hemelgewelf Aristoph. Pax 199.

Russian (Dvoretsky)

κύττᾰρος:
1) свод (οὐρανοῦ Arph.);
2) сотовая ячейка Arph., Arst.

Frisk Etymological English

??? Ik begrijp het niet
Grammatical information: m.
Meaning: cell of a honey-comb, hollow in the flower-bottom of the searose (Nelumbium speciosum), the chalice, in which the acorn sits, the male flower of the pine (Ar., Arist., Thphr.).
Other forms: Besides κύσσαρος ānus (s. on κυσός).
Derivatives: Diminut. κυττάριον bee-cell (Arist.).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]
Etymology: Uncertain. If κύσσαρος is the really Ionic form of κύτταρος and not a transformation of (or after) κυσός [for which I see no reason], we come at a quite unsatisfactory basis *κυτϜαρος, which is together with κύτος, κυσός, κύσθος, κύστις thrown in one pot. The meanings of the two forms are also ununderstandable. An original *κυκ-ι̯αρος would not help farther. - Prob. a Pre-Greek word.

Middle Liddell

κύττᾰρος, ὁ, κύτος
1. the cell of a comb of bees or wasps, Ar.
2. metaph., τοὐρανοῦ τὸν κ. the concave vault of heaven, Ar.

Frisk Etymology German

κύτταρος: {kúttaros}
Forms: — Daneben κύσσαρος ānus (s. zu κυσός).
Grammar: m.
Meaning: ‘Bienenzelle, Höhlung im Blumenboden der Seerose (Nelumbium speciosum), der Kelch, in dem die Eichel sitzt, der männliche Blütenzapfen an der Fichte’ (Ar., Arist., Thphr.).
Derivative: Deminutivum κυττάριον Bienenzelle (Arist.).
Etymology : Nicht sicher erklärt. Wenn κύσσαρος die echt ionische Form von κύτταρος und nicht eine Umbildung von (od. nach) κυσός ist, ergibt sich eine ganz unbefriedigende Grundform *κυτϝαρος, die zusammen mit κύτος, κυσός, κύσθος, κύστις in einen Topf geworfen wird; s. die Lit. zu den genannten Wörtern. Auch ein urspr. *κυκι̯αρος od. ähnl. hilft nicht weiter.
