Κατά μία άποψη, η λ. έχει παραχθεί από τη λ. οἶμος «δρόμος οδός», εξαιτίας του ότι το οἶμος έχει χρησιμοποιηθεί προς δήλωση της μελωδίας, του ήχου, του μέλους ενός άσματος (πρβλ. τις φρ. «οἶμος ἀοιδῆς», «ἐπέων οἶμον», «λύρης οἴμους»). Κατ' άλλους, όμως, η προηγούμενη άποψη είναι παρετυμολογική και η λ. οἴμη θα πρέπει να αναχθεί σε ένα θέμα που μαρτυρείται στο αρχ. νορβ. seidr «μαγεία, γοητεία» και στο αρχ. ινδ. sāman- «τραγούδι» ή, κατ' άλλους, σε som-yo- (πρβλ. χεττιτ. išhamai- «τραγουδώ» και αρχ. ινδ. sāman- «τραγούδι»].
