English (LSJ)

[ᾰ], ωπος, ὁ,

A piece of burning wood or charcoal, Ar.Ach.321, Th.729, Stratt.55, Luc.Lex.24. (τύφω: for the termin., cf. αἱμάλωψ.)

German (Pape)

[Seite 1222] ωπος, ὁ, nach deu alten Erkl. οἱ ἀπολελειμμένοι τῆς θύψεως (τύφω) ἄνθρακες, οἱ ἡμίκαυτοι, halbverbrannter Feuerbrand. Gluthkohle; Ar. Ach. 320, wo man es Kohlenmeiler übersetzt; Thesm. 729.

French (Bailly abrégé)

ωπος (ὁ) :
tison à moitié brûlé.
Étymologie: θύω¹.

Greek Monolingual

με τα αρχ. ινδ. dhūmra «με το χρώμα του καπνού» και dhūmari «ομίχλη»].

Greek Monotonic

θῡμάλωψ: [ᾰ], -ωπος, ὁ (τύφω), κομμάτι καμμένου ξύλου ή ξυλάνθρακα, καυτό κάρβουνο, σε Αριστοφ.

Russian (Dvoretsky)

θῡμάλωψ: ωπος (ᾰ) ὁ головня: ἀποδεῖξαί τινα θυμάλωπα Arph. превратить в головню, т. е. сжечь кого-л.; οἷον αὖ μέλας τις ὑμῖν θ. ἐπέζεσεν! Arph. какая ярость вспыхнула в вас!

Frisk Etymological English

-ωπος
Grammatical information: m.
Meaning: prob. piece of burning wood, charcoal (Com., Luc. Lex. 24).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Formation like αἱμάλωψ mass of blood, bloodshot place (Hp., pap.), νυκτάλωψ seeing in the night = day-blind(ness); sec. night-blind, night-blindness, to which ἡμεράλωψ. - On the obscured ending -ωψ s. Schwyzer 426 n. 4; the basis must have been a nominal λ-stem (cf. e. g. αἴθαλος, αἰθάλη), in its turn derived from a mo-stem (cf. zu θυμός). (Not to Skt. *dhūmara-, from where dhūmrá-) - However, our word will have nothing to do with seeing, nor can θυμ- be identified. Cf. also ἀγχίλωψ, αἰγίλωψ which is no doubt a Pre-Greek word (s.v.).

Middle Liddell

θῡμά˘λωψ, ωπος, τύφω
a piece of burning wood or charcoal, a hot coal, Ar.

Frisk Etymology German

θυμάλωψ: -ωπος
{thumálōps}

Etymology : Bildung wie αἱμάλωψ Blutgeschwür, blutunterlaufene Stelle (Hp., Pap.), νυκτάλωψ in der Nacht sehend = tagblind, auch Tagblindheit; sekundär nachtblind, Nachtblindheit, wozu ἡμεράλωψ. — Über den verdunkelten Ausgang -ωψ s. Schwyzer 426 A. 4; als Grundlage hat ein nominaler λ-Stamm gedient (vgl. z. B. αἴθαλος, αἰθάλη), der seinerseits entweder zu einem men-Stamm mit Wechsel men ~ mel (vgl. θῦμα s. 2. θύω) in Beziehung steht oder aus einem mo-Stamm (vgl. zu θυμός) abgeleitet ist. Eine Entsprechung von θυμαλ(ο)- kann in aind. *dhūmara-, woraus durch Analogie dhūmrá- rauchfarben, vorliegen; daneben die davon unabhängigen dhūmarī f.
