[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Ονόματα εντόμων που χρησιμοποιούνται ευρύτερα στην καθημερινή γλώσσα υπόκεινται σε φθογγικές μεταβολές και εμφανίζονται σε μεγάλη ποικιλία μορφών κατά γλώσσα τόσο ώστε είναι δύσκολο να προσδιοριστεί με βεβαιότητα η αρχική μορφή της ρίζας τους (πρβλ. την ποικιλία τών ΙΕ ριζών morw-i, mour- και meur-, όπου ανάγονται τα αβεστ. maoiri-, αρχ. σλαβ. mraviji, αρχ. ρωσ. morovij, αρχ. νορβ. maurr και αρχ. σουηδ. myra. Στην αρχ. Ινδική εμφανίζεται στην αρχή τών τ. w- και στη συνέχεια -m- (πρβλ. αρχ. ινδ. vamra και valmīka «μυρμηγκοφωλιά»), γεγονός που οφείλεται μάλλον σε ανομοιωτική τροπή του αρχικού -m- σε -w-. Με τους τ. της αρχ. Ινδικής θα μπορούσαν να συνδεθούν οι γλώσσες που παραδίδει ο Ησύχ. βόρμαξ και βύρμακες < μύρμᾱξ με ανομοίωση (όπου το β- ανάγεται σε F-), καθώς και ο τ. ὄρμικας στον οποίο το F- έχει σιγηθεί. Προϊόν ανομοίωσης θα πρέπει να θεωρηθεί και το λατ. formīca «μερμήγκι» < mormīca (πρβλ. formīdo < mormīdo). Στον τ. μύρμηξ εμφανίζεται το επίθημα -ηξ με λαρυγγικό φθόγγο (πρβλ. σκώληξ, σφήξ, και τα λατ. formīca και αρχ. ινδ. valmīka-). To -υ- του μύρμηξ, τέλος, αποτελεί μάλλον αντιπροσώπευση του φωνηεντικού -r- με -υρ- (αντί -αρ- ή -ρα-), πρβλ. ἄγυρις < ἀγείρω. Ο νεοελλ. τ. μυρμήγκι με απόδοση του αρχ. επιθήματος -ηξ, -ηκος με -γκ- (πρβλ. σφήξ - σφήγκα), ενώ ο τ. μερμήγκι με ανομοιωτική τροπή του -υ- σε -ε-.
