Grammatical information: adj.
Meaning: Not quite clear; hated; annihilating, destructive; unseen (Il.).
Origin: GR [a formation built with Greek elements]
Etymology: It is difficult to decide what is the primary meaning, but it is rather clear that it is α privativum with ἰδεῖν. Ivanov UCLA Indo-eur. Studies 1, 1999, 283-292 compares Russ. nevidal and assumes invisible > strange, dangerous.

Frisk Etymology German

{aḯdēlos}
Meaning: verhaßt, verderblich, auch (vorw. spät) unsichtbar, dunkel (ep. poet. seit Ilias).
Etymology: Zusammenbildung aus α privativum und ἰδεῖν mit ηλο-Suffix, also eig. nicht anzusehen. Unrichtig Bechtel Lex. und Frisk Adj. priv. 7 (nach Buttmann) *unsichtbar machend aus denominativem *ἀϝιδέω. Wieder anders Risch 101 und Thieme Studien 50 A. 3.
