ἀθερίζω

From LSJ

καλῶς γέ μου τὸν υἱὸν ὦ Στιλβωνίδη εὑρὼν ἀπιόντ' ἀπὸ γυμνασίου λελουμένον οὐκ ἔκυσας, οὐ προσεῖπας, οὐ προσηγάγου, οὐκ ὠρχιπέδισας, ὢν ἐμοὶ πατρικὸς φίλος → Ah! Is this well done, Stilbonides? You met my son coming from the bath after the gymnasium and you neither spoke to him, nor kissed him, nor took him with you, nor ever once felt his balls. Would anyone call you an old friend of mine?

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: v.
Meaning: make light of (Il.). Orig. always with negation.
Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: Unknown. The glosses ἀθερές ἀνόητον, ἀνόσιον, ἀκριβές H. and ἀθερής· ὁ σίδηρος ἀτειρης ὅταν θερίζῃ etc. H. seem unrelated. An old proposal is to derive it from *ἄθερος, Skt. ádhara- (be)low; s. Bechtel Lex. Another proposal is to derive it from ἀθήρ, as flocci facio. Both not very convincing.

Middle Liddell

to slight, make light of, Lat. nihil curare, c. acc. pers., Hom. [deriv. uncertain].]

Frisk Etymology German

ἀθερίζω: {atherízō}
Forms: bei Homer nur im Präsensstamm u. zw. immer mit Negation; später auch im Aorist und in bejahenden Sätzen.
Meaning: gering achten, verachten
Derivative: Dazu ἀθέριστος· ἀφρόντιστος Zonar., A. Fr. 128 (cod. -ιτον).
Etymology: Nicht sicher erklärt. Seit Leo Meyer Vgl. Gramm. 2, 23 oft aus einem *ἄθερος = aind. ádhara- unten befindlich hergeleitet, s. Bechtel Lex. Persson Beiträge 52 vergleicht ansprechend ἀθερές· ἀνόητον, ἀνόσιον H. und erwägt Verwandtschaft mit aind. dhar- festhalten, tragen usw. (s. θρόνος).
