[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Τεχνικός όρος αβέβαιης ετυμολ. που εμφανίζει επίθημα -ιξ (πρβλ. ελ-ιξ, κύλ-ιξ). Ο τ. συνδέεται με το λατ. calx, -cis «ασβέστης», το οποίο, κατά μία άποψη, είναι δάνειο από την Ελληνική, αν και, κατ' άλλους, φαίνεται εξίσου πιθανό οι δύο τ. να είναι παρλλ. δάνεια από κάποια μεσογειακή γλώσσα. Σύμφωνα με μια παλαιότερη υπόθεση, που δεν θεωρείται πια πιθανή, η λ. ανάγεται στη συνεσταλμένη βαθμίδα sk(h)l- της ΙΕ ρίζας sk(h)el- «σχίζω, κόβω, σπάζω» (πρβλ. σκάλλω, λατ. silex, -icis «χαλίκι»).
