German (Pape)
[Seite 687] ἡ, das männliche Glied, Ar. Nubb. 1001 u. sonst.
French (Bailly abrégé)
ης (ἡ) :
membre viril, particul. le prépuce, le gland.
Étymologie: DELG v. πέος.
Dutch (Woordenboekgrieks.nl)
πόσθη -ης, ἡ [~ πέος] pik:. ἕξεις ἀεὶ... πόσθην μικράν je zult altijd een kleine pik hebben Aristoph. Nub. 1014.
Russian (Dvoretsky)
πόσθη: ἡ membrum virile Arph.
Greek Monolingual
η, ΝΜΑ
Greek Monotonic
πόσθη: ἡ (βλ. πέος), ανδρική μεμβράνη, σε Αριστοφ.
Greek (Liddell-Scott)
Εἰρ. 1300· οὕτω, ποσθαλίσκος, ὁ, ὁ αὐτ. ἐν Θεσμ. 291· πρβλ. Θετταλίσκος, κωραλίσκος.
Frisk Etymological English
Grammatical information: f.
Meaning: the male member (Ar. Nu. 1014), also foreskin (medic.).
Other forms: Cf. ἀκροβυστία bel.
Derivatives: Dimin. πόσθιον n. (Hp., Ar.); -ία f. foreskin (Ph.), metaph. stye on the eyelid (medic.); shortened from ἀκρο-ποσθ-ία (s.bel.; Scheller Oxytonierung 43 n. 2) ?; -ων, -ωνος m. provided with π., vulgar designation of a boy (Ar. Pax 1300; meaning unclear in Luc. Lex. 12); also PN (for it Βόσθων [Halicarn.]?; Masson Beitr. z. Namenforsch. 10, 162) like -ίων, -ύλος; id., with familiar λ-enlargement, -αλίων (Dor. inscr. around 200a); s. Taillardat Rev. de phil. 87, 249f.; -αλίσκος = -ων (Ar. Th. 291; coni. Dindorf, agreeing Taillardat l.c.). -- Compound ἀκρο-ποσθ-ία f. (Hp., Arist.) -ιον n. (Poll., Ruf.) foreskin; for this ἀκροβυστία f. id., coll. the uncircumcised = heathendom (LXX, NT), prob. with euphemistic folk etymology after βύω (EM 53, 47, Blass-Debrunner $ 120, 4).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Of old conncted with πέος; ποσ- is then explained from πέ[σ]-ος with ablaut. For the ending cf. σάθη, also κύσθος a.o. (Specht Ursprung 252). Other proposals by Sandsjoe Adj. auf -αιος 100 n. 1 (cf. Schwyzer 425 Zus. 2) and by Szemerényi Arch. Linguist. 5, 13 ff. (IE *ghu̯osdh-ā, to which also, through Illyr. intermediary, OCS gvozdь nail, Lat. hasta bar, javelin, OIr. bot penis ?). -- If ἀκροβυστία contains the same word in a different shape, the word is Pre-Greek, which is quite possible for a word of this meaning.
Middle Liddell
πόσθη, ἡ, v. πέος
membrum virile, Ar.
Frisk Etymology German
πόσθη: {pósthē}
Grammar: f.
Meaning: das männliche Glied (Ar. Nu. 1014), auch Vorhaut (Mediz.).
Derivative: Demin. πόσθιον n. (Hp., Ar.); weitere Abl. -ία f. Vorhaut (Ph.), übertr. Gerstenkorn am Augenlid (Mediz.); aus ἀκροποσθία (s.u.) abgekürzt (Scheller Oxytonierung 43 A. 2) ?; -ων, -ωνος m. ‘mit π. versehen’, vulgäre Ben. eines Knaben (Ar. Pax 1300; Bed. unklar hei Luk. Lex. 12); auch PN (dafür Βόσθων [Halikarn.] ?; Masson Beitr. z. Namenforsch. 10, 162) wie -ίων, -ύλος; ebenso, mit familiärer λ -Erweiterung, -αλίων (dor. Inschr. um 200a); s. Taillardat Rev. de phil. 87, 249f.; -αλίσκος = -ων (Ar. Th. 291; coni. Dindorf, zustimmend Taillardat a. O.). — Zusammenbildung ἀκροποσθία f. (Hp., Arist.) -ιον n. (Poll., Ruf.) Vorhaut; dafür ἀκροβυστία f. ib., koll. die Unbeschnittenen = das Heidentum (LXX, NT), wohl mit euphemistischer Volksetymologie nach βύω (EM 53, 47, Blass-Debrunner ̨ 120, 4).
Etymology: Seit alters zu πέος gezogen; dabei wird ποσ- als mit πέ[σ]-ος ablautend erklärt. Zum Ausgang vgl. σάθη, auch κύσθος u.a. (Specht Ursprung 252). Andere Vorschläge von Sandsjoe Adj. auf -αιος 100 A. 1 (vgl. Schwyzer 425 Zus. 2) und von Szemerényi Arch. Linguist. 5, 13 ff. (idg. *ghu̯ozdh-ā, wozu noch, durch illyr. Vermittlung, aksl. gvozdь Nagel, lat. hasta Stange, Wurfspieß, air. bot penis[?]).
