English (LSJ)

ατος, τό,

A large heavy wave before it breaks, swell that is the forerunner of a storm: metaph., of the swelling threats of Cleon, Ar.Eq.692 (expld. as κόλον κῦμα, Sch.ad loc.; τυφλὸν κῦμα, Hsch.; κωφὸν κῦμα, Suid.).

German (Pape)

[Seite 1474] τό, eine große, sich still u. langsam an das Ufer heranwälzende Woge, wie sie bes. dem Sturm vorangehen u. sein Nahen verkündigen; übertr., von Kleons leeren Drohworten, Ar. Equ. 692; die Alten erkl. κολοβόν, κωφὸν κῦμα.

French (Bailly abrégé)

ατος (τό) :
vague allongée, longue lame, signe de tempête.
Étymologie: κόλος, κῦμα.

Greek Monotonic

κολόκῡμα: -ατος, τό, μεγάλο κύμα πριν σπάσει (κόλον κῦμα), η φουσκοθαλασσιά που προηγείται της καταιγίδας, σε Αριστοφ.

Russian (Dvoretsky)

κολόκῡμα: ατος τό досл. «безмолвная» волна (во время затишья, перед грозой), перен. надвигающаяся гроза, угроза Arph.

Dutch (Woordenboekgrieks.nl)

κολόκυμα -ατος, τό [κόλος, κῦμα] deining.

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: n.
Meaning: large heavy wall, before it breaks, of the threats of Cleon, only Ar. Eq. 692,
Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: already in antiquity explained in different ways: κόλον κῦμα (sch. ad loc.), τυφλὸν or μακρὸν κῦμα (H.), κωφὸν κῦμα καὶ μη ἐπικαχλάζον (Suid.). S. Taillardat, Images $ 343. A determinative compound with attributive first member would however surprise. The word is rather a painful momentay creation referring to κόλον bowels; speaking is the ἀλλαντοπώλης.

Middle Liddell

κολόκῡμα, ατος, τό,
a large heavy wave before it breaks (κόλον κῦμἀ, the swell that foreruns a storm, Ar.

Frisk Etymology German

κολόκυμα: nur Ar. Eq. 692,
{kolókuma}
Meaning: vom Wortschwall des Kleon,
