[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. < - στερητ. + κῦμα «το θαλάσσιο κύμα». Σημειώνεται ότι τόσο το ἀκύμων (Ι) όσο και το ἀκύμων (ΙΙ) στην πραγματικότητα έχουν κοινή ετυμολογική αρχή, τη λ. κῦμα (< κύω), διαφοροποιημένη σημασιολογικά ως «κυματισμός, θαλάσσιο κύμα» (> ἀκύμων Ι) και «κύημα, έμβρυο» (> ἀκύμων ΙΙ)].
