[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Αβέβαιης ετυμολ. Κατά την πιθανότερη άποψη, ο τ. ανάγεται στη μορφή bhō-w- της ρίζας του φώγω «ψήνω, καίω», αν θεωρηθεί ως αρχική η σημ. της λ. «έγκαυμα». Λιγότερο πιθανή, ωστόσο, θεωρείται η άποψη ότι ο τ. με αρχική σημ. «φουσκάλα, φλύκταινα», ανάγεται στην ΙΕ ρίζα p(h)ŭ- (πρβλ. φῦσα, λατ. pussula / pustula) και έχει σχηματιστεί πιθ. από μια μορφή phōu- της ρίζας (πρβλ. φώκη) με επίθημα -ίς, -ίδος (πρβλ. ψηφίς)].
