[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Ο. τ. μηλ-ότης < μῆλον (II) «κοπάδι, αγέλη ζώων» + κατάλ. -ότης (πρβλ. ιππότης, τοξότης). Το μηλ-άτης έχει προέλθει πιθ. με απλολογία από τ. μηλ-ηλάτης (< μῆλον (II) + -ηλάτης < ἐλαυνω), πρβλ. βοηλάτης.
