[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Η λ. ταγός έχει σχηματιστεί από το θ. ταγ- του ρ. τăσσω (πρβλ. ταγ-ή, τάγ-μα) εμφανίζει, όμως, το αναμενόμενο βραχύ -ă- μόνο σε κάποια χωρία του ομηρικού κειμένου. Αντίθετα, η λ. απαντά στην τραγική ποίηση και πιθ. σε θεσσαλικές και δελφικές επιγραφές με -ᾱ-, το οποίο μπορεί να ερμηνευθεί ως προϊόν της αναλογικής επίδρασης άλλων στρατιωτικών όρων όπως η λ. λοχᾶγός].

Etymology: Thessalischer Amtstitel, der von den Tragikern dem fremden Kolorit zuliebe aufgegriffen wurde (vgl. Björck Alpha impurum 153). Seit alters mit τάσσω, τάττω verbunden, wobei die Vokallänge uralt sein muß. Nach Bezzenberger BB 12, 240 wäre damit zunächst lit. pa-togùs ‘bequem, gefügig. gefällig’, su-tógti sich trauen lassen, sich verheiraten, sich verbinden zu vergleichen.
