English (LSJ)
ή, όν, or γαῦσος, η, ον (accent uncertain, Gal.18(2).518; codd. of Hp. have γαῦσος but γαυσοί),
A crooked, bent outwards, μηρός Hp.Fract.20, Art.77.
German (Pape)
[Seite 476] (nach Galen. auch γαῦσος), gekrümmt, gebogen. Hippocr. Bei Hesych. auch γαυσόω, krümmen.
Greek (Liddell-Scott)
γαυσός: -ή, -όν, καὶ Αἰολ. γαῦσος, α, ον, κυρτός, «στραβός», καμπύλος, μηρ ὸς Ἱππ. Ἀγμ. 765, Ἄρθρ. 837· ― γαυσόομαι, εἶμαι κυρτός, κυρτοῦμαι, Σωραν. Med. Min. 1. 251.
Greek Monolingual
γαυσός, -ή, -όν και γαῡσος, -α, -ον (Α)
κυρτός, στραβός.
[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Η λ. γαυσός (από ρ. g∂u/γαυ
«κούφιος, στρογγυλός») έχει σχηματισμό ανάλογο προς τα επίθ. σε -σός, που αποτελούν λέξεις της καθημερινής γλώσσας (πρβλ. βλαισός «στρεβλός», λοξός, φοξός «οξύς, μυτερός»)].
Frisk Etymological English
Grammatical information: adj.
Meaning: crooked, bent outwards (Hp.).
Other forms: or γαῦσος? (DELG; the acc. varies).
Derivatives: Davon γαυσάδας ψευδής H. (see DELG); denom. γαυσόω (Sor.). Also ἔγγαυσον ἔνσκαμβον H., cf. Strömberg Greek Prefix Studies 127.
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]
Etymology: For the suffix cf. βλαισός, λοξός etc., Chantr. Form. 434. One compares γαυλός (semantically improbable), γυρός, γύαλον (formally impossible) and the root IE *geu- (*gēu-) curve etc. which is (formally) impossible. Rather a Pre-Greek adjective.
Dutch (Woordenboekgrieks.nl)
γαυσός -ή -όν, ook γαῦσος -η -ον gebogen, verdraaid. Hp.
Frisk Etymology German
γαυσός: (γαῦσος)
{gausós}
Meaning: auswärts gekrümmt, schief (Hp.).
Derivative: Davon γαυσάδας· ψευδής H., wohl eig. substantivisch; vgl. besonders Σιμάδας (von Σίμων, σιμός, Schwyzer 509 m. Lit.); denominatives Verb γαυσόω (Sor., H.). Außerdem ἔγγαυσον· ἔνσκαμβον H., vgl.
