[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Τεχνικός όρος αβέβαιης ετυμολ., με επίθημα -ιδ- που απαντά σε σημασιολογικά συγγενείς λέξεις που δηλώνουν μικρά εργαλεία (πρβλ. γραφίς, γλυφίς, κοπίς). Πιθανώς γλαρίς < γρα-ρις, με ανομοιωτική τροπή του -ρ- σε -λ- < γράω «τρώγω, ροκανίζω, γριτσανίζω»].
