[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Αβέβ. ετυμολ. Πιθ. πρόκειται για δάνειο. Ο τ. ανήκει στις λέξεις με επίθημα -χος (πρβλ. σύρριχος «καλάθι»). Ο αττ. τ. άρριχος σχηματίστηκε με αφομοίωση από τον ιων. τ. άρσιχος. Το θέμα αρσι-προήλθε πιθ. από ŗso / ŗsi- < ΙΕ. ρίζα ers- / res- «στρέφω, τυλίγω, πλέκω» (πρβλ. αρχ. ινδ. rajjuh «σχοινί», λατ. restis «σχοινί» κ.ά.) ή κατ' άλλους από το αίρω «υψώνω»].
