[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Λέξη ήδη ομηρική, αβέβαιης ετυμολ. Πιθ. < γλάκος, με αφομοίωση < (θ.) γλακ- (πρβλ. γάλα). Σύμφωνα προς άλλη άποψη, το γλάγος θεωρείται ως ετυμολογική βάση αυτής της οικογένειας από αρχική μορφή ρίζας βλαγ- < mlg- (πρβλ. βλέπω -γλέπω, βλέφαρον -γλέφαρον), ασθενή μεταπτωτική βαθμίδα της ρίζας melg-, melk
πρβλ. αμέλγω (βλ. και λ. γάλα). Παράλληλα προς το γλάγος μαρτυρείται επίσης η γλώσσα του Ησύχ. «κλάγος
γάλα», τ. που ερμηνεύθηκε ως προερχόμενος < γλάκος, με μετάθεση τών φθόγγων -κ- και -γ-.
