οὐκ ἐπιλογιζόμενος ὅτι ἅμα μὲν ὀδύρῃ τὴν ἀναισθησίαν, ἅμα δὲ ἀλγεῖς ἐπὶ σήψεσι καὶ στερήσει τῶν ἡδέων, ὥσπερ εἰς ἕτερον ζῆν ἀποθανούμενος, ἀλλ᾿ οὐκ εἰς παντελῆ μεταβαλῶν ἀναισθησίαν καὶ τὴν αὐτὴν τῇ πρὸ τῆς γενέσεως → you do not consider that you are at one and the same time lamenting your want of sensation, and pained at the idea of your rotting away, and of being deprived of what is pleasant, as if you are to die and live in another state, and not to pass into insensibility complete, and the same as that before you were born

German (Pape)
[Seite 413] τό, das Zahnfleisch, gew. im plur., οὔλοισιν ἐξήμελξας εὐτραφὲς γάλα, Aesch. Ch. 885; τὰ οὖλα, Plat. Phaedr. 251 c; oft bei Medic.; sing. bei D. L. 7, 176.
Greek (Liddell-Scott)
464. 28, κτλ.
French (Bailly abrégé)
ου (τό) :
gencive.
Étymologie: DELG étym. obscure.
Greek Monotonic
οὖλον: τό, κυρίως στον πληθ. οὖλα, τά, τα ούλα, τα τμήματα της στοματικής κοιλότητας που περιβάλλουν τα δόντια, σε Αισχύλ., Πλάτ.
Russian (Dvoretsky)
οὖλον: τό (преимущ. pl.) десна Aesch., Plat., Arst.
Frisk Etymological English
Grammatical information: n.
Meaning: gums (Hp., A., Pl., Arist.).
Other forms: mostly pl. -α.
Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: Basis uncertain: *(Ϝ)όλσον, *(Ϝ)όλνον or even (if Ion. LW [loanword] in Att.) *(Ϝ)όλϜον? Etymolog. also uncertain: both connection with εἰλέω, εἴλομαι press together referring to the compact, massive structure of the gums as with εἰλέω turn, wind, εἰλύω winden (around), envelop (prop. *"tumour, envelop(ment)"; Bq, WP. 1, 299, Pok. 1141, W.-Hofmann s. gingīva) seem thinkable. But the etym. may well be quite diff.
Middle Liddell
οὖλον, ου, μοστλψ ιν πλ., οὖλα, ων, τά, mostly in pl.]
the gums, Aesch., Plat.
Frisk Etymology German
οὖλον: {oũlon}
Forms: gew. pl. -α,
Grammar: n.
Meaning: Zahnfleisch (Hp., A., Pl., Arist. u.a.).
Etymology : Grundform unsicher: *(ϝ)όλσον, *(ϝ)όλνον oder sogar (falls ion. LW im Att.) *(ϝ)όλϝον? Etymologisch ebenfalls mehrdeutig: sowohl Anknüpfung an εἰλέω, εἴλομαι ‘zusammendrängen, -pressen’ mit Beziehung auf die kompakte, massige Struktur des Zahnfleisches wie an εἰλέω drehen, winden, εἰλύω umwinden, umhuflen (eig. *"Wulst, Umhüllung"; Bq, WP. 1, 299, Pok. 1141, W.-Hofmann s. gingīva) scheint an und für sich denkbar.
