[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Αβέβαιης ετυμολ. λ. η οποία εμφανίζει επίθημα -ωλο- (πρβλ. εἴδ-ωλο-ν). Έχει γίνει προσπάθεια να ερμηνευθεί η λ. με την αναγωγή της σε κάποια ΙΕ ρίζα: κατά μία άποψη, σε ρίζα bhasko- «δεσμός, δέμα» στην οποία οδηγούν πιθ. και ο τ. της μακεδονικής διαλέκτου βάσκιοι
