Middle Liddell

αἰπύς
a height, a steep, Aesch.:— πρὸς αἶπος ἔρχεσθαι, metaph. of a difficult task, Eur.

Frisk Etymology German

αἶπος: {aĩpos}
Grammar: n.
Meaning: steile, schroffe Höhe (A., E., Hp. u. a.);
Derivative: davon αἰπεινός (< *αἰπεσνός) steil (poet. seit Il.). Dagegen ist αἰπήεις (αἰπήεσσαν Φ 87, danach A. R. 2, 721 und AP 7, 273) nur eine Erweiterung von αἰπύς (Schwyzer 527: 3; verfehlt Thieme Studien 71). — Neben αἶπος steht αἰπύς steil, jäh (meist ep. und poet. seit Il.). Die abweichende Stammbildung in αἰπά (αἰπὰ ῥέεθρα Θ 369, Versende) und αἰπήν (πόλιν ... αἰπήν γ 130 usw., immer am Versende) ist offenbar metrisch bedingt. Hierher wahrscheinlich αἶψα, s. d.
Etymology: Unerklärt; phantastisch Brugmann IF 37, 155 ff.
