[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. < ασπίς(-ίδος). Ο τ. ασπιδίτης πιθ. αναλογικά προς το οπλίτης. Το επίθημα -ιώτης του τ. ασπιδιώτης για λόγους μετρικούς (πρβλ. ομηρ. αγροιώτης). Η υπόθεση ότι οφείλεται επίσης σε αναλογική επίδραση του στρατιώτης προσκρούει στη μεθομηρική εμφάνιση του τ. στρατιώτης.
