Greek Monotonic

δέλφαξ: -ᾰκος, ἡ, νεαρό γουρούνι, γουρουνάκι, χοιρίδιο, σε Ηρόδ. κ.λπ. (αμφίβ. προέλ.).

Frisk Etymological English

-ακος
Grammatical information: f. (m.)
Meaning: mother swine, as opposed to χοῖρος (Ion.-Att.).
Derivatives: Dimin. δελφάκιον (Att.) and δελφακίς (pap. and Ostr.); also δελφακίνη id. (Epich. 124, 2; Chantr. Form. 204), adj. δελφάκειος (Pherekr.). Denomin. δελφακόομαι become δ. (Ar. Ach. 786).
Origin: IE [Indo-European] [373] *gʷelbʰu- womb
Etymology: Cf. κόραξ, σκύλαξ (Schwyzer 497, Chantraine 377ff.) and like these in detail unclear. Probaly from a word for womb (δελφύς?, *δέλφος?, s. ἀδελφός). Cf. δέλφιξ, δελφίς, Δελφοί.

Middle Liddell

[deriv. uncertain]
a young pig, porker, Hdt., etc.

Frisk Etymology German

δέλφαξ: -ακος
{délphaks}
Grammar: f. (m.)
Meaning: Sau, Mutterschwein im Gegensatz zu χοῖρος (ion. att.).
Derivative: Davon die Deminutiva δελφάκιον (att.) und δελφακίς (Pap. und Ostr.); ferner δελφακί̄νη ib. (Epich. 124, 2; vgl. Chantraine Formation 204), Adj. δελφάκειος (Pherekr. u. a.). Denominativum δελφακόομαι Sau werden (Ar. Ach. 786).
Etymology: Wie κόραξ, σκύλαξ und andere Tiernamen gebildet (Schwyzer 497, Chantraine 377ff.) und wie diese im einzelnen unklar. Auszugehen ist jedenfalls von einem Wort für Gebärmutter, Mutterleib (δελφύς?, *δέλφος?, s. ἀδελφός), somit eig. Muttertier. Vgl. δέλφιξ, δελφίς, Δελφοί.
