Frisk Etymological English

1.
Grammatical information: m.
Meaning: branch, bough, sapling (Il.), also knot in a tree or stem (Thphr.).
Other forms: Aeol. ὔσδος (Sapph., Schwyzer 182)
Compounds: As 2. member e.g. in πέντ-οζος with five knots, as name of the hand (Hes. Op. 742), πεντά-οζος with five knots (Thphr.).
Derivatives: ὀζ-ώδης branchy, having many knots (Thphr., Dsc.), -ωτός branchy, -αλέος id. (AP; nach ἀζαλέος; also after τρηχαλέος?, Debrunner IF 23, 32), -όομαι to put forth branches (Hp., Thphr.).
Origin: IE [Indo-European] [785] *h₃esdos branch
Etymology: Old inherited word for branch, identical with Arm. ost, gen. -oy, Germ., Goth. asts OHG a. NHG ast, IE *osdo-s. Besides with deviating length (IE ?) OS MLG ōst knot in wood, knag. -- Since Brugmann IF 19, 379 n. 1 and Grundr.2 II: 2, 816 analysed as *o-sd-o-s sitting (on the stem) , "Ansitzer", from 2. ὀ- (s. v.) and zero grade of sed- in ἵζω (s. ἕζομαι). But because of equally built Lat. nīdus nest from *ni-sd-o-s, prop. "sitting down, place to sit down" rather to be understood with Bloornfield Lang. 3, 213f. as "place to sit on", referring to birds. -- From dimin. ὀζάριον MGr. ἀζάρι, from where NGr. ζαρώνω shrink, contract (Hatzidakis Glotta 11, 176 ff.). The connection with Hitt. hasduir has been given up as its meaning is not quite certain (`weeds, waste'?; Tischler 206).
2. Meaning: in ὄζος Ἄρηος, a nickname of brave heroes (Il.)
See also: s. ἄοζος.

Middle Liddell

όζος, αεολιξ ὔσδος, ὁ,
I. a bough, branch, twig, shoot, Il., Hes., etc.
II. metaph. an offshoot, scion, ὄζος Ἄρηος, of a famous warrior, Il.; so, τὼ Θησείδα ὄζω Ἀθηνῶν Eur.

Frisk Etymology German

ὄζος: 1. (seit Il.)
{ózos}
Forms: äol. ὔσδος (Sapph., Schwyzer 182)
Grammar: m.
Meaning: Ast, Zweig, Schößling, auch ‘Baum- od. Stengelknoten’ (Thphr.).
Composita : Als Vorderglied z.B. in πέντοζος mit fünf Asten, als Ben. der Hand (Hes. Op. 742), πεντάοζος mit fünf Knoten (Thphr.).
Derivative: Davon ὀζώδης ästig, knotenreich (Thphr., Dsk.), -ωτός ästig, -αλέος ib. (AP; nach ἀζαλέος; auch nach τρηχαλέος?, Debrunner IF 23, 32), -όομαι Äste treiben (Hp., Thphr.).
Etymology : Altererbtes Wort für Zweig, mit arm. ost, Gen. -oy, germ., got. asts ahd. u. nhd. ast uridentisch, idg. *ozdo-s. Daneben mit abweichender Länge (idg. ō?) ags. mnd. ōst Knoten im Holz, Knorren. — Seit Brugmann IF 19, 379 A. 1 und Grundr.2 II: 2, 816 in *o-zd-o-s zerlegt und als ‘(am Stamm) ansitzend’, "Ansitzer" erklärt, von 2. ὀ- (s. d.) und schwundstuf. sed- in ἵζω (s. ἕζομαι). Aber wegen des gleichgebildeten lat. nīdus Nest aus *ni-zd-o-s, eig. "das Niedersitzen, Ort zum Niedersitzen" eher mit Bloornfield Lang. 3, 213f. als "place to sit on", mit Beziehung auf die Vögel, zu verstehen. — Aus Demin. ὀζάριον mgr. ἀζάρι, wovon ngr. ζαρώνω verschrumpfen, zusammenziehen (Hatzidakis Glotta 11, 176 ff.).
