English (LSJ)
Adv., Ep. for ἔμπας.
Spanish (DGE)

German (Pape)
[Seite 812] ion. = ἔμπας, w. m. s.
French (Bailly abrégé)
ion. et épq. c. ἔμπας.
Russian (Dvoretsky)
ἔμπης: эп.-ион. = ἔμπας.
Greek (Liddell-Scott)
ἔμπης: ἐπίρρ. Ἐπ. ἀντὶ τοῦ ἔμπας.
English (Autenrieth)
wholly, nevertheless; the former meaning is denied by some scholars, and there are but very few passages to which the latter meaning is not applicable, e. g. Od. 18.354, Od. 19.37; in its common signif. of still, yet, nevertheless, ἔμπης may be placed after the concessive part. (precisely like ὅμως in Att.), and freq. at the end of the verse, though grammatically and in sense belonging to the leading verb; Τρωσὶ μὲν εὐκτὰ γένηται (ἐπικρατέουσι περ) ἔμπης, Ξ, Il. 9.518, etc. καὶ ἔμπης, Od. 5.205; ἀλλ' ἔμπης, Il. 8.33; δ ἔμπης correl. to μέν, Il. 1.562.
Greek Monolingual
Greek Monotonic
ἔμπης: Επικ. αντί ἔμπας.
Frisk Etymological English
Grammatical information: adv.
Meaning: in any case, really, all the same, nevertheless (Il.).
Other forms: Dor. ἔμπας, also ἔμπαν, ἔμπα
Origin: GR [a formation built with Greek elements]X [probably]
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Acc. to Brugmann IF 27, 274ff. prop. nom.-acc. n. validity, reality, truth, to El. ἐμπάω (ἐμπῳ̃, ἐπ-εμπήτω) execute (a fixed punishment), realise, πέπαμαι, πᾶς etc. Thus Hirt IF 32, 221 and WP. 1, 366. - Improbable that ἐμ- is IE sem- in εἷς (Schwyzer 620). - ἔμπα like ἠρέμα, ἀτρέμα; ἔμπαν (α or α) as in ἅπαν (Brugmann l. c.); also Björck Alpha impurum 123f. Radt, Pindars zweiter u. sechster Paian 200-208 suggests ἐν πᾶσιν in all cases.
Frisk Etymology German
ἔμπης: {émpēs}
Forms: dor. ἔμπας, auch ἔμπαν, ἔμπα
Meaning: jedenfalls, tatsächlich, durchaus, gleichwohl (ep. seit Il., Pi., Trag., sp. Prosa).
Etymology: Herkunft unsicher. Nach Brugmann IF 27, 274ff. eig. Nom.-Akk. n. Gültigkeit, Wirklichkeit, Wahrheit, zu el. ἐμπάω (ἐμπῳ̃, ἐπεμπήτω) ‘(eine beschlossene Strafe) zur Geltung bringen, realisieren, vollstrecken’, πέπαμαι, πᾶς usw. Ähnlich Hirt IF 32, 221 und WP. 1, 366. — Die Gleichsetzung von ἐμ- mit idg. sem- in εἷς (Schwyzer 620) hat wenig für sich. — ἔμπα wie ἠρέμα, ἀτρέμα; ἔμπαν (α od. α) wie ἅπαν (Brugmann a. a. O.); vgl. noch Björck Alpha impurum 123f.
