French (Bailly abrégé)

ικος (ἡ) :
coupe, vase à boire.
Étymologie: R. Κυλ ; cf. κυλλός.

English (Slater)

κῠλιξ
1 wine cup ἐν ξυνῷ κεν εἴη συμπόταισίν τε γλυκερὸν καὶ Διωνύσοιο καρπῷ καὶ κυλᾰκεσσιν Ἀθαναίαισι κέντρον fr. 124. 4.

Greek Monolingual

κύλιξ, -ικος, ἡ (AM)
βλ. κύλικας.

Greek Monotonic

κύλιξ: [ῠ], -ῐκος, ἡ (κύω), κύπελο, κούπα, κρασοπότηρο, Λατ. calix, σε Ηρόδ., Πίνδ. κ.λπ.· περιελαύνειν τὰς κ., περιφέρω τα ποτήρια, σε Ξεν.

Russian (Dvoretsky)

κύλιξ: ῐκος (ῠ) ἡ чаша, кубок, бокал: ἐπὶ τῇ κύλικι Plat., ἐπὶ τῆς κύλικος Diog. L. в παρὰ τὴν κύλικα Plut. за чашей (вина).

Dutch (Woordenboekgrieks.nl)

κύλιξ -ικος, ἡ [~ κάλυξ?] poët. dat. plur. κυλίκεσσι beker voor wijn;; κ. μεγάλη κεραμίνη grote beker van aardewerk Hdt. 4.70.1; overdr. het drinken: ἐπὶ τῇ κύλικι of παρὰ τὴν κύλικα bij een goed glas, bij het drinken.

Frisk Etymological English

-ικος
Grammatical information: f. (m.)
Meaning: (drinking) cup (posthom.).
Other forms: note κυλίσκη, -ίχνη
Compounds: Some compp., e.g. κυλικ-ήρυτος scooped with a cup (Call.), εὑ-κύλικος with beautiful cups (AP).
Derivatives: Diminut.: κυλίκιον (Thphr.), κυλίσκη (D. H., Poll., hardly from -ικ-ίσκη Schwyzer 542), -ίσκιον (Poll.); -ίχνη (Alc., Ar.; Chantraine Formation 195); Lat. LW [loanword] culigna (cf. W.-Hofmann s. calix); -ίχνιον (Ar., hell.), -ιχνίς (Achae.); further κυλικ-εῖον cup-stander (comp., pap.), -ειος belonging to a cup (Poll.), -ώδης κ.-like' (sch.).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Agrees but for the stem-vowel with Lat. calix deep bowl, cup (from where NHG Kelch etc.), but a variation a\/u is unknown. The word κάλυξ (s.v.) seed-vessel, husk is not identical with our word for the same reason. With anlaut sk Umbr. skalçe-ta ex patera, cf. σκαλλίον κυλίκιον μικρόν, σκαλίς σκαφεῖον H. does not belong here for the same reason (s. v.). (Also not here Skt. kaláśa- m. jar, pot, dish.) As with so many names of cups etc. we must reckon with loans. Wrong Pok. 550 f., W.-Hofmann s. calix (also Ernout-Meillet) who consider the word as IE. Connecting IE *(s)kel- is (in spite of NHG Schale a. o.) not convincing. See Fur. 110, 132 with n. 65, who points to κυλί-σκ-η and κυλίχν-ιον etc. with aspiration before the nasal (which is un-Greek and un-IE). So the word is Pre-Greek. -ικ is a typical Pre-Greek suffix (Beekes, Pre-Greek, suffixes); κυλ-ικ- has a typical Pre-greek structure (ib.)

Middle Liddell

κύ˘λιξ, ῐκος, ἡ, [κύω]
a cup, drinking-cup, wine-cup, Lat. calix, Hdt., Pind., etc.; περιελαύνειν τὰς κ. to push round the cup, Xen.

Frisk Etymology German

κύλιξ: -ικος
{kúliks}
Grammar: f. (m.)
Meaning: Trinkschale, Becher (nachhom.).
Composita : Einzelne Kornpp., z.B. κυλικήρυτος mit einem Becher geschöpft (Kall.), εὐκύλικος von schönen Bechern begleitet (AP).
Derivative: Mehrere Deminutiva: κυλίκιον (Thphr. u. a.), κυλίσκη (D. H., Poll., < -ικίσκη Schwyzer 542), -ίσκιον (Poll.); -ίχνη (Alk., Ar.; Chantraine Formation 195); lat. LW culigna (vgl. W.-Hofmann s. calix m.Lit.); -ίχνιον (Ar., hell.), -ιχνίς (Achae. u.a.); ferner κυλικεῖον Becherständer (Komp., Pap.), -ειος zum Becher gehörig (Poll.), -ώδης ’κ.-ahnlich’ (Sch.).
Etymology : Stimmt bis auf den Stammvokal zu lat. calix tiefe Schale, Becher (> nhd. Kelch usw.); dazu noch, im Ausgang abweichend, aind. kaláśa- m. Topf, Krug, Schüssel; mit a-Vokal ebenfalls κάλυξ Fruchtkapsel, Blumenkelch. Anlautendes skin umbr. skalçe-ta ex patera, vgl. dazu σκαλλίον· κυλίκιον μικρόν, σκαλίς· σκαφεῖον H. Wie bei so vielen Bechernamen ist mit Entlehnung zu rechnen; nach WP. 1, 442, Pok. 550 f., W.-Hofmann s. calix (auch Ernout-Meillet) am ehesten idg. Die Anreihung an idg. (s)qel- spalten (W.-Hofmann nach Reichelt) besagt (trotz nhd. Schale u. a.) wenig. — Uber -υ- in κύλιξ Schwyzer 351.
