[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Αβέβαιης ετυμολ. Η λ. απαντά ήδη στον Όμηρο στον τ. πληθ. τήθεα, ο οποίος αντιστοιχεί σε εν. τῆθος και τήθεον. Έχει διατυπωθεί, όμως, και η άποψη ότι οι τ. τήθεα και τήθεον έχουν σχηματιστεί με υστερογενή εξέλιξη από τον τ. τήθυον, ο οποίος, κατά την άποψη αυτή, έχει προέλθει από τ. θή-θυον (με ανομοίωση του πρώτου δασέος συμφώνου), σύνθ. από τους τ. θῆσαι «θηλάζω» + θύον (πρβλ. θύλακος, βλ. και γήθυον / γηθυλλίς). Ωστόσο, η άποψη αυτή προσκρούει στην αρχαιότητα του ομηρ. τ. τήθεα, ο οποίος πρέπει να θεωρηθεί αρχικός. Από την οικογένεια αυτή, τέλος, έχει προέλθει πιθ. ως υποχωρητικός σχηματισμός η ονομ. της θεότητας Τηθύς.
