French (Bailly abrégé)

-ῶ :
couper ou diviser en deux.
Étymologie: διχότομος.

Russian (Dvoretsky)

διχοτομέω: рассекать пополам, делить надвое Plat., Arst., Polyb., NT: σελήνη διχοτομοῦσα Plut. луна в середине месяца, т. е. полнолуние (см. διχομηνία).

Greek (Liddell-Scott)

δῐχοτομέω: κόπτω εἰς δύο, διαχωρίζω εἰς δύο, Πλάτ. Πολιτ. 302Ε, Ἀριστ. Προβλ. 16. 4, κτλ. 2) τιμωρῶ αὐστηρότατα, ἀπηνέστατα, Εὐαγγ. κ. Ματθ. κδ΄, 51. 3) διαιρῶ εἰς δύο (λογικῶς), Ἀριστ. Ζ. Μ. 1. 3, 1., 1. 4, 9.

English (Strong)

from a compound of a derivative of δίς and a derivative of temno (to cut); to bisect, i.e. (by extension) to flog severely: cut asunder (in sunder).

English (Thayer)

διχοτόμω: future διχοτομήσω; (διχότομος cutting in two); to cut into two parts (Winer s RWB under the word Lebensstrafen; (B. D. under the word Smith's Bible Dictionary, Punishments, III. b. 3; especially Wetstein on Matthew, the passage cited)), by which criminals and captives were cut in two. But in the text the words which follow, and which imply that the one thus 'cut asunder' is still surviving, oppose this interpretation; so that here the word is more fitly translated cut up by scourging, scourge severely, (but see Meyer on Matthew, the passage cited). (Occasionally in Greek writings from Plato down.)

Greek Monotonic

δῐχοτομέω: μέλ. -ήσω, κόβω στα δύο, διαιρώ, σε Πλάτ., Κ.Δ.

Middle Liddell

to cut in two, cut in twain, Plat., NTest. [from δῐχότομος]
