νήπιοι, οἷς ταύτῃ κεῖται νόος, οὐδὲ ἴσασιν ὡς χρόνος ἔσθ᾿ ἥβης καὶ βιότου ὀλίγος θνητοῖς. ἀλλὰ σὺ ταῦτα μαθὼν βιότου ποτὶ τέρμα ψυχῇ τῶν ἀγαθῶν τλῆθι χαριζόμενος → fools, to think like that and not realise that mortals' time for youth and life is brief: you must take note of this, and since you are near the end of your life endure, indulging yourself with good things | Poor fools they to think so and not to know that the time of youth and life is but short for such as be mortal! Wherefore be thou wise in time, and fail not when the end is near to give thy soul freely of the best.

English (LSJ)

scratch an outline, sketch lightly: hence, do anything perfunctorily, Sch.Ar.Ra.1545, cf. Hsch.; also σκαριφεύω, Sch. Ar.l.c.

German (Pape)

[Seite 889] die Oberfläche eines Körpers leicht kratzen, aufritzen, aufscharren, wie die Hühner den Sand u. den Mist; bes. vom Maler, einen leichten Umriß machen (s. σκαριφεύω) dah. leicht, oberflächlich Etwas thun; σκαριφήσασθαι nach Schol. Ar. Ran. 1493 ἐπὶ τοῦ ἐπισεσυρμένως τι ποιεῖν καὶ μὴ κατὰ τὴν προσήκουσαν ἀκρίβειαν, σκιαγραφεῖν, wie Harpocr. v. διεσκαριφησάμεθα.

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: v.
Meaning: to tear up the surface of a body, to scratch, to make an outline (H., sch. on Ar. Ra. 1497).
Derivatives: σκαριφ-ησμοί m. pl. approx. scribblings, quibbles (Ar. Ra. 1497), -ήματα n. pl. id. (sch. Ar. Nu. 630, Phot.); also -εύω with -εύματα id. (sch., Suid.). To this, prob. as backformation, σκάριφος (-ον) m. (n.) outline, sketch, slate-pencil (H., sch., EM; after sch. also = κάρφος, φρύγανον through false association).
Origin: IE [Indo-European] [946] *skribʰ- scratch
Etymology: Popular iterativ-intensive, except for the formation nearly identical with Lat. scribō (from where schreiben etc.); beside it with -p- Latv. skrīpât scratch, scribble, write down, with loss of the s- Germ., e.g. OWNo. hrīfa scratch, tear; unclear MIr. scrīp(a)id scratches. The inlaut. -α- can be unproblemat. explained as secondary propvowel (Schwyzer 644 n. 2); in any case not old ablaut. Further forms with rich lit. and usual root analysis in WP. 2, 585f., Pok. 946 f., W.-Hofmann s. scrībō.

Frisk Etymology German

σκαριφάομαι: {skarīpháomai}
Grammar: v.
Meaning: die Oberfläche eines Körpers aufritzen, aufkratzen, einen Umriß machen (H., Sch. zu Ar. Ra. 1497)
Derivative: mit σκαριφησμοί m. pl. etwa Gekritzel, Tand (Ar. Ra. 1497), -ήματα n. pl. ib. (Sch. Ar. Nu. 630, Phot.); auch -εύω mit -εύματα ib. (Sch., Suid.). Dazu, wohl als Rückbildung, σκάριφος (-ον) m. (n.)
