[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Λ. άγνωστης ετυμολ., που εμφανίζεται με μεγάλη ποικιλία μορφών, κυρίως σε ό,τι αφορά τον φωνηεντισμό: ψόαιψοιαίψυαίψειαίψίαι (πρβλ. χρόα: χροιά). Οι τ. που παραδίδει ο Ησύχιος, με αρκτικό σύμφ. φ-, φοῦαι και φύλλες, θα μπορούσαν να παραπέμψουν σε αρχαιότερο αρκτικό συμφωνικό σύμπλεγμα σφ- (πρβλ. σφε: φιν: ψε, σφάκελος (ΙΙ): ψάκελον: φάκελος). Η προηγούμενη υπόθεση, σε συνδυασμό με τον φωνηεντισμό -υ-, θα μπορούσε να οδηγήσει σε σύνδεση τών τ. με τον συνώνυμο ὀσφῦς].
