Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: n.
Meaning: shame, ugliness, pl. disgraceful deeds (Il.).
Other forms: Comp. superl. αἰσχίων, αἴσχιστος.
Derivatives: With ro- resp. u-stem αἰσχρός dishonouring, ugly and αἰσχύνω dishonour Med. be ashamed (Il.), Αἰσχύλος.
Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: Compared with Goth. aiwiski n. `αἰσχύνη', which requires rather difficult forms: αἶσχος < *aiguzghos < *aigʷʰs-kos, aiwiski < *aigʷʰes-ki-om); the addition of -ko-, -ki- after an s-stem is strange (on the Gothic word Mezger KZ 79, 1960, 40). The words will have nothing to do with each other. De Lamberterie, Adj. en υς 835-840, compares αἴδομαι *aid-sk-; semantically not easy.

Middle Liddell

I. shame, disgrace, Hom., etc.:—in pl. shameful deeds, Od.
II. ugliness or deformity, of mind or body, Plat., Xen.

Frisk Etymology German

αἶσχος: {aĩskhos}
Forms: Daneben die primären Komparativ- und Superlativbildungen αἰσχίων, αἴσχιστος und, mit dem Wechsel zwischen ro- und u-Stamm, einerseits αἰσχρός schändlich, häßlich, anderseits das denominative αἰσχύνω beschimpfen, häßlich machen Med. sich schämen (seit Il.) mit dem retrograden αἰσχύνη Schande, Scham (ion. att.). Der u-Stamm noch in Αἰσχύλος. Vgl. Leumann Glotta 32, 217 und Seiler Steigerungsformen 76f.
Grammar: n.
Meaning: Schande, pl. ‘Schandreden, -taten’; Häßlichkeit (seit Il.).
Derivative: Ableitungen: 1. Von αἰσχρός: αἰσχρότης Häßlichkeit (selten: Pl. Grg. 525a, Ep. Eph. 5, 4), αἰσχροσύνη (Tz.). 2. Von αἰσχύνω (-ομαι): αἰσχυντήρ Schänder (A. Ch. 998), αἰσχυντ-ηλός schüchtern, bescheiden, auch schändlich (Pl., Arist.) mit αἰσχυντηλία (Plu.); das -τ- stammt aus dem Oppositum ἀναίσχυντος (Alk., att.) mit ἀναισχυντία, -τέω, -τημα; sekundär αἰσχυντός (Ps. Phok.). Daneben die noch selteneren αἰσχυντηρός und αἰσχυντικός.
Etymology: Die Bedeutung, z. T. auch die Form legen einen Vergleich mit got. aiwiski n. αἰσχύνη nahe. Die Grundformen werden indessen einigermaßen verwickelt (αἶσχος aus idg. *aigzghos < aighs-qos, aiwiski aus idg. *aighes-qii̯om?). Vgl. außer Bq, wo ältere Lit., Brugmann-Thumb 117, Feist Vgl. Wb. d. got. Spr. s. aiwiski.
