(Illyrian acc. to Fest.p.453 L., citing Ennius.)

[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Η λ. έχει σχηματιστεί με επίθημα -ύνη τών λ. που φανερώνουν όργανο (πρβλ. κορύνη, τορύνη). Πρόκειται πιθ. για δάνεια λ., γεγονός που επιβεβαιώνεται και από το αντίστοιχο λατ. sibyna / sybina, που θεωρήθηκε ιλλυρικό δάνειο. Κατά τον Ηρόδοτο, η λ. σιβύνη είναι κυπριακός τ., ενώ, κατ' άλλους, ανάγεται σε θρακοφρυγική ρίζα και συνδέεται με τα: περσ. zōpīn (πρβλ. ζιβύνη), αρμεν. sәvīn, συρ. swbyn με σημ. «λόγχη»].
