Etymology: Altes dehnstufiges suffixloses Nom. agentis zum idg. Verb für tragen in φέρω usw. (s.d.), mit lat. fūr, -ris m. Dieb, formal auch mit arm. buṙn Hand, Faust, Gewalt (n-St. sekundär wie in otn Fuß, s. πούς) identisch: idg. *bhōr, eig. "der Träger" (vgl. lat. ferre et agere, ferre et rapere; Zweifel bei Pariente Emer. 12, 85 ff.). Weiteres m. Lit. bei W.-Hofmann s.v., wo auch über die Frage der an sich nicht unmöglichen Entlehnung aus dem Griech. — Durch die Neubildungen κλώψ und vor allem durch κλέπτης (schon Il.) wurde das altererbte φώρ zurückgedrängt und ersetzt; nur das abgeleitete φωράω hat sich gut erhalten. Ein anderes altes Wort für Dieb ist im poet. Adj. τηΰσιος (s.d.) eingekapselt.
