[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. < ευ + σπλάγχνον. Η λ. σπλάγχνα σήμαινε κυρίως τους πνεύμονες και την καρδιά, που θεωρούνταν έδρα τών συναισθημάτων. Έτσι η λ. εύσπλαχνος δήλωσε «αυτόν που έχει καλή καρδιά, τον πονόψυχο». Το δυσκολοπρόφερτο συμφωνικό σύμπλεγμα -γχν- απλοποιήθηκε νωρίς σε -χν-].
