Greek Monotonic

θᾰμά: επίρρ. (ἅμα), συχνά, πολλές φορές, σε Όμηρ., κ.λπ.

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: adv.
Meaning: often (Il.)
Derivatives: θαμάκις (: πολλάκις) id. (Pi.). θαμινά id. (Pi., Hp.), adj. θαμινός crowded, close-set (Call.; cf. πυκινά, -ινός) with θαμινάκις (Hp.); also θαμεινός, after αἰπεινός (h. Merc. 44; Wackernagel Gött. Nachr. 1914, 119 n.2 = Kl. Schr. 2, 1176 n. 2).
Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: Beside θαμά (accent after πολλά, Wackernagel Akz. 34 = Kl. Schr. 2, 1103) stands the u-stem *θαμύς (τάχα: ταχύς) in θαμέες pl. close-set, crowded, f. θαμειαί (Hom.; accent, Schwyzer 385); cf. also Θαμυ-κλῆς PN (Bechtel Hist. Personennamen 197). Comp. θαμύντεραι πυκνότεραι H. (cf. ἰθύντατα). Here also θάμυρις H., prob. after πανήγυρις, with which H. glosses it; also as PN (Β 595, inscr.); cf. Bechtel Namenst. 25f.; further ὁδοὺς θαμυρούς τὰς λεωφόρους; θαμυρίζει ἁθροίζει, συνάγει H.; also intr. (BCH 50, 401, Thespiae). - Denomin. of θαμά: θαμίζω come frquently (Il.; cf. Schwyzer 736). Beside θημ-ών, θωμ-ός (s. v.) one assumed θαμ-ά to be a reduced grade, which is impossible (from θη- in τί-θη-μι, but this had θε-, as in θέμεθλα, θέμις).

Middle Liddell

[ἅμα]
often, oft-times, Hom., etc.

Frisk Etymology German

θαμά: {thamá}
Grammar: Adv.
Meaning: oft (vorw. poet. seit Il.) mit θαμάκις (: πολλάκις) ib. (Pi.).
Derivative: Davon θαμινά ib. (Pi., Hp., Ar. in lyr., X. u. a.), Adj. θαμινός häufig, gedrängt (Kall. u. a.; vgl. πυκινά, -ινός) mit θαμινάκις (Hp.); auch θαμεινός, nach αἰπεινός u. a. (h. Merc. 44 u. a.; Wackernagel Gött. Nachr. 1914, 119 A.2 = Kl. Schr. 2, 1176 A. 2).
Etymology: Neben θαμά (Akzent nach πολλά, Wackernagel Akz. 34 = Kl. Schr. 2, 1103) steht der u-Stamm *θαμύς (τάχα: ταχύς) in θαμέες pl. dicht gedrängt, häufig, f. θαμειαί (Hom.; Akzent, Schwyzer 385 m. Lit.); vgl. noch Θαμυκλῆς EN (Bechtel Hist. Personennamen 197). Komp. θαμύντεραι· πυκνότεραι H. (vgl. ἰθύντατα). Hierher noch θάμυρις H., wohl nach πανήγυρις, womit es u. a. von H. glossiert wird; auch als PN (Β 595, Inschr.); vgl. Bechtel Namenst. 25f.; außerdem ὁδοὺς θαμυρούς· τὰς λεωφόρους; θαμυρίζει· ἁθροίζει, συνάγει H.; auch intr. (BCH 50, 401, Thespiae). — Denominativum von θαμά: θαμίζω häufig kommen, verkehren, häufig sein (seit Il.; vgl. Schwyzer 736). Neben den hochstufigen θημών, θωμός (s. d.) steht θαμά mit alter Schwundstufe; bei Abtrennung des suffixalen -μ- ergibt sich die regelrechte Schwundstufe von θη- in τίθημι, die in sämtlichen Verbalformen und in zahlreichen Nomina von θε- ersetzt worden ist (s. θέμεθλα, θέμις).
