(ἐγγύς) adverb (from ἐν and γυιον (limb, hand), at hand; (but rather allied with ἄγχι, ἄγχω, anxious, anguish, etc.; see Curtius § 166; Vanicek, p. 22)) (from Homer down), the Sept. for קָרוב; near;
1. of place and position;
a. properly: absolutely, G L T Tr WH (but see below)); with the genitive (Matthiae, § 339,1, p. 812; Winer's Grammar, 195 (183); (471 (439); Buttmann, § 132,24)), but see above); Matthiae, § 386,6; Kühner, § 423,13; (Jelf, § 592,2)), οἱ ἐγγύς, those who are near of access to God, i. e. Jews, and οἱ μακράν, those who are alien from the true God and the blessings of the theocracy, i. e. Gentiles: ἐγγύς γίνεσθαι, to be brought near, namely, to the blessings of the kingdom of God, to make nigh is equivalent to to make a proselyte, cf.
